I just finished an incredible book that was recommended to me by one of my close friends whom I studied Yoshinkan Aikido with in Birmingham. The title of the book is "Beyond the Known" and was written by Tri Thong Dang. It is about a martial-arts quest, and a meditation on the art of discipleship. In a series of parables relating the experiences of an unusually talented but otherwise typical martial artist, it calls for teachers and practitioners to question their motives and goals, to go beyond the superficial dazzle of prizes and awards, beyond repetition of techniques, ultimately, to go beyond the known - the ultimate goal of the martial artist.
You can find this book on Amazon for as little as $11.86. It is definitely worth the read for those of us wanting to go beyond our training and to find the true spirit of budo and the martial way.
