I just finished an incredible book that was recommended to me by one of my close friends whom I studied Yoshinkan Aikido with in Birmingham. The title of the book is "Beyond the Known" and was written by Tri Thong Dang. It is about a martial-arts quest, and a meditation on the art of discipleship. In a series of parables relating the experiences of an unusually talented but otherwise typical martial artist, it calls for teachers and practitioners to question their motives and goals, to go beyond the superficial dazzle of prizes and awards, beyond repetition of techniques, ultimately, to go beyond the known - the ultimate goal of the martial artist.

You can find this book on Amazon for as little as $11.86. It is definitely worth the read for those of us wanting to go beyond our training and to find the true spirit of budo and the martial way.

I just finished reading a book that I was pretty good and I thought I would share.

The book is titled “Mind over Muscle”. It is a collection of the writings of Jigoro Kano that spans about 50 years from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s. Jigoro Kano was the inventor of Kodokan Judo.

The book is divided into three main sections, “The Development of Judo”, “The Spirit of Judo”, and “Judo Training”. The book concentrates on Kano’s reasons behind creating Judo, the origins of some of the elements, and the process of changing (ju)“jutsu” (skill) into (Ju)“do” (way). He explains his ideas of the value of Judo outside of the purely martial aspects of the art, to include the social, moral education, and physical benefits.

Being a collection of excerpts of books, lectures notes, and essays, there are some places where it gets a little repetitious. However, it is well written overall and well translated.

Even though Kano was born at the end of the Meiji Restoration period, during the beginning of Japan’s modernization and industrialization period, the conclusions he draws and his descriptions of state of society and it’s probably future are very applicable to today. Some things he says could not be truer if they were written yesterday.

If anyone is interested in borrowing the book let me know.

Thanks to whomever moved all the requirements info to the web, they were very helpful.
Also, I would like to request that the Kata sheets (and/or other printed materials currently available at the dojo) be moved to the web. We could print them from home and save the dojo money... It would also make the information much more accessible. This information on the website would likely increase interest as well.

I just thought I put this on the forum and see what happens.

A little while ago I was listening to sensei Kevin talking to the advanced youth class about when it is appropriate to defend yourself and to what level force should be applied in a given situation. I started thinking about how that conversation applied to me. And then I started to wonder what the laws actually were regarding self defense. Not that I am trying to determine how high I can escalate a situation without getting into trouble, but I think we all should know such information in case a situation arises. By studying martial arts, we are, in fact, learning to apply force, in some cases, deadly force. The definition of "martial" is "...characteristic of or befitting a warrior" and like all warriors, we need to know the rules of engagement. With power, comes responsibility.

In my search for answers, I ran across this press release from Gov. Riley...

May 31, 2006

State’s New Self-Defense Law Goes Into Effect Thursday

MONTGOMERY – A new state law giving citizens greater legal safeguards if they choose to protect themselves rather than flee an intruder goes into effect on Thursday.

Governor Bob Riley signed the law in April, saying the measure will enhance citizens’ right to self-defense.

“Law-abiding citizens shouldn’t be forced to retreat when they are under attack from a criminal. They have the right to protect themselves and their families, and this new law makes that clear,” Governor Riley said.

The new law allows homeowners and vehicle occupants who believe their lives are threatened to use deadly force against intruders. It removes a legal requirement that forced crime victims to retreat when faced with an intruder. The new law also shields those who use deadly force in self-defense from criminal prosecution or civil action. The law does not permit the use of deadly force against those who have a right to be in a house or against law enforcement officers carrying out their duties.

Alabama is one of 11 states that have passed similar laws.

I have tried to find a more official statement (e.g. a copy of the actual federal or state code)

Now, I am not advocating fighting rather than fleeing. I think is always better to give an attacker your wallet or keys rather than fight. Those things can be replaced, but lives can't (your's or their's). But there are crazy people out there that may not want anything but to cause you or your loved ones harm, in that case....

If anyone has anymore information, knows someone in law enforcement, or just has an opinion, please post.
